Innovation in fresh food packaging at AIPIA congress 2014

 At the 2014 AIPIA Congress, held in Chicago at Pack Expo Exhibition from 2 to 4 november 2014, were presented interesting innovations for the packaging of fresh food.

A recent Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) study states that roughly one-third of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted globally, which amounts to about 1.3 billion tons per year.

Ceresana publishes market study on LLDPE

 Linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) is the most versatile type of polyethylene. Large amount of this plastics are used in the production of films in particular. Global revenues generated with LLDPE amounted to US$ 40.0 billion in 2013. A new study of the market research institute Ceresana expects global market value of LLDPE to increase by about 3.9% p.a. until 2021.

Asia leads flexible packaging market

 The Asia Pacific region has the fastest growing packaging demand in the world with China driving much of the marketplace. AMI Consultant Charmaine Russell has reviewed the global flexible packaging markets and will be presenting a review at the second AMI conference on Specialty Packaging Films Asia 2015, taking place from 17-19 March 2015 at the Swissotel The Stamford in Singapore. The Asian region is also a leader in technology with Japan as an early innovator in active and intelligent packaging systems. The Mondelez research group in Singapore studies flexible packaging solutions for confectionery and other foodstuffs. The lead institute for food and packaging studies in Singapore is the Food Innovation & Resource Centre.

A preview of the packaging of the future 60 projects at Emballage 2014

 Focusing more than ever on the future, Emballage 2014 has partnered once again with the French design school Strate to welcome 5 international design schools (from France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Turkey). Together, they will present their projects for the packaging of the future in a 200sqm area for the duration of the exhibition, 17–20 November 2014. This event, renamed this year Best Pack – Design by students for virtuous solutions, will exhibit the 60 virtuous projects created by the students. For the very first time, the fledgling designers will be present, addressing current packaging issues in a live workshop.

UV and EB, are they completely safe for use on food packaging print?

 The perfect recipe for radiation curing for food packaging has not yet been proposed or defined by the EU legislators. All that exists today are the GMP and Framework Regulation, as well as Swiss Ordinance, respected and now widely adopted across the food packaging supply chain, but still something less than the definitive answer. This situation was the driving force behind the Food Packaging Seminar held in Stuttgart in September by RadTech Europe, the regional association promoting the radiation curing technologies across all markets. The event drew together around 90 participants – all experienced specialists from the various disciplines related to the food packaging value chain (raw materials, printing inks, equipment, materials, and brand owners) - to discuss and debate the proper use of radiation curing in food-safe printing, with the aim of enabling this technology - which delivers a broad platform of benefits - to achieve its well-deserved maximum potential.
