Environment and packaging

There will be a revision of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (PPWD) in the coming years. Referring to this and others challenges that European Parliament is going to face about environmental policy, Apeal offers an interesting interview to Caroline Jackson, Member of the European Parliament between 1994 and 2009 who played an important role in shaping some key pieces of the EU’s environmental legislation.

She talks about various topics, from climate change to the reduction of energy consumption and waste production. Very interesting the focus on packaging: bio-based and recyclable materials are a good choice to reduce carbon footprint, and could be a great compromise between sustainability and content's protection. Caroline remarks also the advantages of steel packaging, such as the ease of steel recycling through magnetic sorting and the food safety for long-term storage.

A good packaging is also an important instrument to prevent food waste, prioritized by the European Environmental Bureau (EEB) as an area with scope for improvement in terms of fighting CO2. To this end it's important, for instance, a variety of packaging size which allows better gearing to portion sizes.
